Edo, Ondo Polls ‘ll Define Buhari’s Electoral Legacy, Says Tambuwal

Published

on

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has said that the credibility or otherwise of the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states will go a long way in defining President Muhammadu Buhari’s electoral legacy.

Tambuwal stated this in the backdrop of the latest visa ban imposed by the United States on some Nigerian politicians for their alleged roles in the violence that characterised the November 16, 2019 governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states.

In a statement on Tuesday, personally signed by him, the governor stressed the urgent need to strengthen the nation’s electoral process, to restore the hope and aspirations of Nigerians in democracy.

The governor, who also wrote in commemoration of the International Day of Democracy, marked globally every September 15, said, “Indeed the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states are a test case of our preparedness for a rule based and consent enabled governance.

“In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe 15 September of every year as the International Day of Democracy, with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy and invited all member states and organizations to commemorate the day in an appropriate manner that contributes to raising public awareness.

“The preamble of the resolution affirms that while democracies share common features, there is no single model of democracy and that democracy does not belong to any country or region…democracy is a universal value based on the freely-expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems, and their full participation in all aspects of life”.

The Sokoto governor recalled that the struggle for democracy Nigeria involved sweat, blood, diplomacy, compromises and negotiations.

“This had traversed the whole period of pre and post-independence struggle, the First, Second, Third Republics and our current experiment since 1999.

“In our contemporary Nigeria, many young people who did not participate in the various struggles may not understand the intensity of the price paid by our forebears.

“It is with this in mind that I wish to flag various dangers lurking around and threatening to derail our present democratic experiment.”

Tambuwal, who chairs the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, said it has become imperative to rethink the role of not just the electoral umpire, but also the activities of various security agencies in the electoral process in such a manner as to instill in them the culture of inflexible support for democracy and its practice.

He emphasised that any electoral victory obtained other than through the legitimate votes of the people is nothing short of a coup d’etat.

“It completely violates our Constitution which envisaged that governmental authority must be obtained only through the will of the people.

“Going forward, I call on the National Assembly to immediately conclude the long overdue amendments to the Electoral Act to entrench provisions that make it impossible for rigging and manipulation of elections.

“In the same vein, any further amendments to the Constitution must take cognisance of our experiences in previous elections.

“It may be that time has come to introduce aspects of technology in our elections that are fool proof and such should be test run with other elections before the general elections in 2023.

“It bears repeating to say that good governance anchored on a sound economy and corrupt free progressive social, cultural, and infrastructural development is a sine qua non for sustainable democracy.

“It behooves on us all, particularly the political and economic actors on stage to do our utmost to ensure a stable Nigeria.

“Finally, I call on the civil society and the press to continue to play its watchdog role of keeping government in check in order to ensure the survival of our democracy,” Tambuwal added.

CAN Lauds Ayade For Running Welfarist Government

Published

The Cross River State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has commended Governor Ben Ayade for what it described as his welfarist and inclusive governance.

Making the commendation during a courtesy visit to the governor at the executive council chamber of the governor’s office, Calabar, leader of the delegation and Chairman of CAN, Ambassador Okon E. Ekpenyong noted that Ayade’s reelection for a second term in office was a howling endorsement of his industrialization policy.

He lauded the governor for his development strides in the last five years and his continuous support for CAN.

Ekpenyong said CAN was grateful for the governor’s “commitment and continuous support to CAN. Let me also say that your election was an endorsement of your industrialization drive, welfarist and inclusive governance approach.”

According to the chaiman of the Christian body, “For us, this meeting is apt and timely because it affords us the opportunity to say thank you and to honestly commend you for the giant strides and development of the State. Your passionate resolve to put Cross River on the map of Nigeria as a leading state in both infrastructure and human development, especially from our tour of the Ayade Industrial Park is worthy of note.”

Ekpenyong, who was accompanied by the retired bishop of Calabar Metropolitan Arch-Diocese, His Grace, Bishop Joseph Ukpo, Senior Special Adviser to Governor Ayade on Religious Matters, Rev. Fr.Bob Etta as well as other CAN members, thanked the governor for his proactive safety measures in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

His words: “The leadership of CAN is indeed very grateful for your profound efforts and proactive safety measures in the management of the COVID 19. We are particularly very grateful for the partnership and synergy that your administration created which enabled CAN to be part of the COVID-19 sensitization and monitoring task force team.

He also acknowledged the role played by the governor in the Christian body’s quest for a secretariat.

Ekpenyong said it was through the magnanimity of the governor “that CAN, Cross River State has been able to own a temporary secretariat after many years which was commissioned by you on 27 may, 2019. And during the commissioning, you donated a 50kva generating set. We sincerely commend you for that show of concern and support.”

The association, therefore, reaffirmed its continuous support and prayers for Governor Ayade as he strives to deliver more developmental projects for the people.

Responding, Ayade who thanked the delegation of the Christian association for their support during his second term electioneering, said: “I would like to thank you for the great support, the way and manner you came out to support me and campaign for me. I want to specially acknowledge your address which emphasised on the most essential essence of government and describing my government as welfarist government.”

Disclosing why his administration is more focused on the people while at the same time prioritising industrialization, the governor said: “A government can build more infrastructure, skyscrapers, award contracts to multinationals who will take billions back to their countries and leave behind a very beautiful city with the best of roads while the people are poor and hungry. When the emphasis is not on the people, you would have failed in your constitutional, spiritual and moral obligation as governor.

“So it is against that understanding and background that our administration is more focused on the people and because I come from a background that has a clear understanding of poverty, because I have also seen wealth at a very early age, I know the difference.”

Against that backdrop, the governor noted that “In my gratitude to God, my commitment has been to lift people from extreme want, hunger and poverty and ensure that if nothing else under the regime of Ayade, kindred and family should have someone in government.”
